Bunnysitting Overview
Going on vacation but can't take your rabbits with you? We can help! Since 2004, we have been bunny-sitting in our home to raise money for The Rabbit Haven, a 501(c)3 nonprofit educational organization dedicated to house rabbit rescue, shelter, care, and public education. As Haven volunteers, we have years of experience in caring for house rabbits and the support of a network of rabbit experts! When your bunnies stay with us, they get great care and your donation helps other rabbits find homes and receive medical care.
Scheduling
The best way to find out if we have space available for your rabbits is to send us an email in advance of your time away from home. We will schedule a drop-off and pick-up date and time and will give you our contact information, including email and cell phone numbers, which you can use to get in touch with us while you are away. Please let us know in advance if you will not be able to make your drop-off or pick-up times. Early mornings and evenings generally are best as we both work during the day.
When you drop off your bunnies, we will have you fill out a bunny-sitting contract form. The form covers all of the things we need to know in order to care for your rabbits, including your contact information, care and feeding instructions, the name and phone number of your vet, and so on.
Rates
We charge for bunnysitting based on the number of bunnies and separate pens needed to house them. Our basic rate is $16 per day for one bunny and $22 for a pair in the same pen. Our rates include a $2 per bunny per day charge that goes to us to help cover the cost of fresh greens, hay, pellets, litter, and bedding. Everything after the $2 is a donation that goes to the Rabbit Haven. We can provide receipts upon request for the donation part of the rates.
We give a discount of 15% for long-term stays of one week or more. If you are a Rabbit Haven volunteer, let us know -- additional discounts may apply!
To help clarify our rates, here are a couple of examples. If you brought one bunny over on Monday morning and picked him up on Wednesday night, the charge would be $16 times 3 days or $48 (if you picked him up on Wednesday morning we would only charge for two days). If you dropped a pair of bunnies off on Sunday night and picked them up the following Sunday night, the charge would be $16 times 8 days less the 15% long-term stay discount, or $149.60. We will provide an estimate of the cost of boarding your rabbits with us prior to their stay.
Housing and Food
While they stay in our home, your bunnies will be housed indoors inside Precision Pens with blankets and sheets covering the floor. We have pens, litterboxes, bowls, and all other manner of supplies, but feel free to bring your bunny's favorite toy or blanket to make her feel at home. You can bring as much or as little as you like in order to make their stay here comfortable and homey.
We generally buy organic greens for our own bunnies and are very careful about the quality and quantity that we feed to our long-eared friends. We provide orchard grass or timothy hay and Oxbow brand timothy pellets. If your rabbits have any special dietary needs, please let us know.
Physical Care
We have experience giving oral medications as well as subcutaneous injections and fluids. We are also able to assist feed bunnies on an emergency basis. We may need to charge extra for administering medications.
We ask that you leave a credit card number on file with your regular vet or with us in the unlikely event that we have to bring your rabbit in for an emergency vet visit.
Other Services
We have successfully bonded many pairs of bunnies, including our own. If your single rabbit is looking for a friend, let us know and we can help...for a reasonable matchmaking donation to the Haven!
We will do nail trims for a $7 donation per bunny.
In addition to rabbits, we have also cared for rats, mice, guinea pigs, and exotic mammals like chinchillas. Information on tortoise-sitting available upon request.
