PetSmart to stop selling rabbits
December 18, 2007
I just received an email from Susana Della Maddalena, Vice President and Executive Director of PetSmart Charities, informing me that PetSmart has decided against selling dwarf rabbits in their stores. According to Bruce Richardson, Director of External Communcations at PetSmart:
We learned a lot from this experience and consider the test a success for that reason. Unfortunately, the company didn’t get the kind of business results we expected, so at this time we’ve made a decision to quit selling dwarf bunnies except for those already in or planned for these test stores. It will take us a while to phase out of this project. We’re working with our vendors to ensure that these bunnies still go to good homes, and are spayed and neutered prior to leaving the vendors’ facilities.
The Rabbit Haven and our local PetSmart have had a long, productive relationship: Rabbit Haven holds adoption events twice a month in the store and has adopted out hundreds of house rabbits at these events.
